Worker

The vast majority of the bees in a colony (60,000 workers to 200 drones to 1 queen). These infertile females do almost everything from feeding the young, guarding the colony and foraging for nourishment depending on their stage of development

Queen

The larger, egg-laying bee on which the colony is focussed. There can (usually) only be one Queen at a time. She lays all the eggs on her own and lasts around 3-4 years. She’ll leave and take half the colony with her (swarming) if the conditions are right. This is bad for a beekeeper!

Drone

A male bee raised in small numbers by each colony to mate with Queens from other colonies. The drones don’t perform any of the other tasks that are needed to keep the colony going. They are ejected as Autumn approaches as the colony doesn’t keep any males over winter
